What's The Best Age To Start Camming?
I'm glad I didn't become a camgirl at 18. Granted, there's not much of a difference between an 18 and 21-year-old to someone in their 30s or 40s, but I do feel that there's a sweet spot in terms of how old one ought to be to start camming.
First, the basics. You need to be of legal age in whatever country you're in. Let's get that out of the way.
You also need to check the Terms of Service of the cam site you're performing on to double-check this, but, as far as I know, it's always 18.
Here's the thing, though. And I'm speaking from my own experience, maybe you're a lot more mature and self-assured and a good decision-maker at 18, but I certainly wasn't.
And I'm glad that I spent my late teens traveling, learning about different cultures, living in different cities, going to college, studying a subject I enjoy. If I had just dived headfirst into camming, I would have missed out on a lot of life experiences that have shaped my beliefs and viewpoints.
Camming is so much more than just being an erotic performer. There is a significant social dimension to being a webcam model, and to be able to negotiate the social landscape of camming (being supportive and a good friend to your members, at the same time, having firm boundaries) requires some degree of familiarity with people of different ages, backgrounds, careers, and temperaments.
When you're 18, you've typically only been exposed to a limited social circle, usually your family and high school friends. There aren't enough reference experiences for you to be able to competently deal with the wide variety of people you'll end up meeting in your cam room.
Travel is important too. Camming is a global phenomenon, and unless you block multiple countries, or only stream in your native language (not English), you'll be meeting and interacting with people on every continent. When that happens, you should be open-minded enough to understand their culture and expectations - - and if you're 18 and have never traveled, it's highly unlikely that you know how to do that.
I'm not saying it's impossible, but social skills are developed over time and with repetition, so it's just a matter of having a larger pool of experiences. Now, it's probably not a good idea to practice when you're streaming live in front of a hundred people; the internet never forgets, and it certainly won't forget your social faux pas.
This also extends into the sexual/erotic realm. Of course, camming is performance, but it's also heavily participatory, in that the audience and audience requests play a role in how the performance proceeds and develops. When you're 18, you may not have a firmer sense of what your boundaries are, in terms of what you're willing to do On Camera. This isn't me saying you shouldn't do XYZ thing, but just be cognizant of the fact that it's being recorded, it'll probably be distributed, and the way data storage is expanding, that video clip of you will probably be floating around in cyberspace three decades from now. You probably won't be camming three decades from now, so the whole trope of "any publicity is good publicity" doesn't apply here.
18 is also a dangerous age because it's when we want to voice our positions the loudest. And if your way of making a statement is camming, you may end up putting out content that you'll be embarrassed by in a few years. Age is the great equalizer, and despite what the jeans say, you won't be 21 forever.
Dealing with hate and negativity. Some people are better than it than others. Some girls get hurt. Others suffer from an equally derailing polarity response, ie they lash back by doing more of the thing they're getting pushback on. Both are ineffective, and both lead to stupid decisions that'll stick around with you long after you decide you've had enough. Dealing with negativity, and developing an attitude of equanimity towards your creative work is something that comes with time, and I find myself continuing to develop it. At 18, you may not yet have developed that skillset.
Managing money is also something that most people aren't very good at 18 - - living on your own for even a year or two will teach you a lot about handling your finances. If you start camming at 18 and make a lot of money early on, you may just find creative ways to burn through that money.
It would be fair to respond to these points by saying you'll learn it 'on the job' - and certainly, there are many girls who do. Some of the top camgirls right now are girls who started early and were able to learn quickly, worked hard, and earned their fame.
At the same time, for every popular camgirl who started at 18, I know for a fact that there are fifty more who tried camming for a few months, decided it wasn't their cup of tea, and are now having to erase their camgirl footprint from the interwebs.
So, if you're reading this and you're 18 and want to start camming, consider both sides of the argument. Of course, starting early in any field gives you a major advantage. And maybe your finances are a mess, and camming is your only option right now, because of the lockdown and all that. Of course, in such a predicament, I would say go ahead and do what you need to do. But if you're financially stable, and just interested in camming as a way to express yourself, maybe wait until you're 21, so you've had a few years of real-life experience under your belt by the time you start camming.
